Mark

A quiet Markdown editor for long documents. Your files stay plain Markdown, with a live preview, an outline when you ask for it, find and replace, and recovery copies. No account, no telemetry.

Who it is for

Anyone who writes notes, docs or drafts in Markdown and finds a code editor too heavy and Notepad too bare.

What it does

  • Editor, split and preview views of the same document.
  • Edit a block's Markdown straight from the preview, without turning it into rich text.
  • An outline built from the headings, on demand. Drag a heading to move its whole section.
  • Find and replace, with the matches highlighted in the preview.
  • Task boxes you tick in the preview update the Markdown.
  • Recovery copies of unsaved changes, recent and pinned files, drag and drop.
  • English or French, light or dark, following the system.

Why I built it

I was tired of simple text and Markdown files opening in Notepad with a trail of tabs I did not want, while full code editors felt absurdly heavy for the job. I wanted something that opened quickly, stayed local, and felt simpler than both.

What I built

  • Live editing and preview with search, replacement, task interaction, and sanitized rendering.
  • An outline generated from headings, navigation by click, and drag-and-drop movement of complete sections.
  • Direct editing of a rendered block from the preview without adding a conversion dependency.
  • Atomic saving, per-window recovery copies, recent files, and native desktop packaging.

What it taught me

  • A minimal interface can still support deep document operations.
  • Local-first software requires careful recovery, file-system, and window-state decisions.
